The cover feature/interview, ‘Government
thrust to quality in education’
(July 2009) made interesting reading.
Mr Kapil Sibal is indeed taking educational
reforms to a new level. As a
matter of fact, he has a daunting task
ahead to initiate these educational
reforms in a phased manner. With the
ambitious Right to Education Bill, the
responsibilities of the minister have
grown manifold. Such a momentous
Bill will definitely show the capabilities
of the minister in the coming
future.

The article, ‘Water is must for quality
for life’ (July 2009) was an analysis
on the overall water scenario in India.
Water crisis in the country has worsened
over the years. The government
should take vital steps for the conservation
of water. Even after sixty years
of independence, providing quality
drinking water still remains a challenge
for the government. The water
policies which have been taken up in
the past have yet to bear fruit. It is
time the government took necessary
steps to provide clean drinking water
to citizens by introducing various water conservation schemes; or
else, the problem could assume
alarming proportion in the future.

I liked reading the interview of first
time minister R P N Singh, ‘Taking
a ‘quality’ leap’ (July 2009). Mr R P
N Singh seems to be quite a confident
minister. He is actually in the
thick of action as he holds a very
important post as Minister of State
for Road Transport and Highways.
Talking about the roads and highways
in India, he has a very large
vision. But only a large vision will
not work. The resources which are
required to put that vision into
shape should also follow.
Manjeet Singh, Chandigarh
Ensuring food safety is indeed a
quality step. The government has
done the right thing by declaring
2008-2009 as ‘Food Safety and
Quality Year’. Certainly, the availability
of safe and quality food is
still a challenge in the world and
India is not an exception. Providing
quality food should be on the priority
list of the government. The facts
and figures illustrated in the story
are really disturbing. The government
should consider these seriously
to bring changes in the food sector.
Also, new schemes pertaining to
the food processing industry should
be introduced. This will enhance
the availability of safe and quality
food in India.
