The profile of Padma Shri V. Krishnamurthy, All set to kickstart manufacturing (November 2007) was invigorating and enlightening. It not only highlighted how this visionary serving as chairman of the National Manufacturing Competitiveness Council (NMCC) was all set to inspire the country’s manufacturing sector for global standards, but also how he was instrumental in scripting the success stories of as many as three major and noteworthy public sector undertakings. What makes it all the more interesting as well as stimulating is the fact that even at the ripe old age of 82, V. Krishnamurthy is geared for new challenges.

The special report, Quality makeover for public sector units (November 2007) was an eye-opener. The story informed the readers about the exceptional performance of the public sector units that had even beaten their counterparts in the private sector. No wonder, it helped them enhance their existing reputation once and for all. Significantly, the story was extremely motivating for all young managers: it was primarily due to the right combination of leadership and application of advanced Quality tools that inspired this incredible and astounding success saga for the public sector units.

The cover story, Quest for Quality on the manufacturing landscape (November 2007), was a formal pronouncement to readers like me that the Made-in-India brand had finally arrived and unlike the past, had made the foray not only with a bang but with Quality. The story was a balanced one as it gave a view of the current scenario. It stressed emphatically on the grave need for Quality and how a lot needed to be achieved to ensure India a berth among the Quality manufacturers of the world. For a change, it was nice to learn that for the past few years, India’s manufacturing industry had managed to register a spectacular growth in sectors like textile, machinery and equipment, transport, basic chemicals, iron and steel and last but not the least automobiles.

The interview of Jawahar Sircar, Additional Secretary and Development Commissioner (Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises), Government of India, in the story, MSMEs playing a very important role in growth of industry was well compiled as it made the readers as well as big and small entrepreneurs aware about the key initiatives of the Ministry of MSME in operating several schemes to promote Quality to usher in a competitive spirit all through.
